Background and Past Activities
At the 1996 WSSPC Annual Meeting, the Board of Directors approved the formation of the Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Committee. Member states, provinces, and territories are Alaska, American Samoa, British Columbia, California, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington.
The first Committee initiative was to create a resource within the WSSPC website that showcased existing tsunami-related publications and tsunami mitigation efforts of the Committee’s member states. The Tsunami Center web pages were maintained by David Gronbeck-Jones of British Columbia Provincial Emergency Program until his retirement.
The Committee organized two Tsunami Symposia in 1997 and 1998 to share efforts to improve warning procedures and implement the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program.
The WSSPC Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Committee released WSSPC Report 2011-01: WSSPC Report 2011-01, “Tsunami Hazard Mitigation and Preparedness: A Perspective from State and Territory Tsunami Programs in the High Tsunami Risk Pacific Region” in 2011. The report documents the importance and effectiveness of the state and territorial tsunami programs to prepare local communities at high risk for future damaging tsunamis
