GENERAL INFORMATION

A tsunami is a series of waves most often generated by large, offshore earthquakes. In the open ocean tsunamis are less than a few centimeters high, traveling at speeds nearing 500 miles per hour with wave energy extending from the surface to the ocean floor.  As the tsunami approaches the coastline, the wave energy is compressed into a much shorter distance, creating a series of potentially large, destructive waves and posing a threat to life in coastal communities.

Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program History 1995-2005 - The Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Federal/State Steering Group is composed of representatives from the five states (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington), NOAA, USGS, FEMA, and NSF, and was formed to oversee implementation of the Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Plan and to coordinate efforts between federal agencies and state jurisdictions. In The Senate Appropriations Committee Report (No. 104-353) dated September 30, 1996, the Committee provided $2,375,000 to begin the process of implementing the Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Plan. This became part of Public Law 104-208, dated September 30, 1996.
