With the theme of “Learning from the Past to Protect the Future,” the joint National Earthquake Conference and Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Annual Conference program commemorates the 200th anniversary of the historic series of strong earthquakes that struck the New Madrid seismic zone in late 1811 and early 1812. It will feature many lessons from recent and historic earthquakes that are applicable to the practice of U.S. professionals. The meeting is jointly hosted by EERI and the earthquake consortia*, and will consist of both plenary and concurrent sessions to ensure an abundance of offerings for engineers, scientists, emergency managers, and policy makers.
Visit http://earthquakeconference.org/ for information about the program, the hotel, and how to submit abstracts for one of the poster sessions (deadline January 23).
The following pre-conference programs will be held Tuesday, April 10;
- ASCE Symposium on Seismic Hazard Design Issues in the Central U.S. (full-day, $65 fee),
- New Madrid Earthquake Scenario Workshop (half-day, free), and
- URM Memphis South Main Street Demonstration Workshop (evening, free).
Additionally, a State Seismic Safety Councils and Commissions Meeting will be held Wednesday evening, and Friday evening will feature a free tour of major facilities in downtown Memphis that have been designed or retrofitted for earthquakes, including the $25 million retrofit of the Memphis Pyramid. The tour will be led by some of the area’s top structural engineers and architects, followed by a reception at the downtown University of Memphis Law Department Building, two presentations, and a Q and A session. Maximum space: 45 participants.
For hotel reservations at the group discount or government rates, visit http://2012am.eeri.org/hotel
The meeting venue is the historic Italian Renaissance-style Peabody Hotel, built in 1925 and designated as one of the top 10 grand hotels in the U.S. by Christopher Reynolds of the Los Angeles Times. It's a short walk to the live music of Beale Street and a short drive to Graceland and the National Civil Rights Museum.
* The consortia consists of the Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC), the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC), the Northeast States Emergency Consortium (NESEC), and the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup (CREW).
