Awards in Excellence
Overview
The Western States Seismic Policy Council Awards in Excellence are awarded annually to honor exemplary programs, projects, and products that have significantly contributed to addressing earthquake risk reduction through demonstrated achievements in earthquake mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. One award is selected to receive the Overall Award in Excellence.
Eligibility
State, provincial, territorial, regional, county, or city government or non-profit agencies are eligible for the WSSPC Awards in Excellence. Nominations must be made by someone outside of the nominated agency.
Categories
Awards are considered in the following categories:

Educational Outreach Programs (one award for each
sub-category):
- Outreach to Business/Government
- Outreach to General Public
- Outreach to Schools

Innovations

Legislation

Multi-jurisdictional Planning

Mitigation Efforts

Non-Profit Agency Efforts

Selection Criteria
During the award selection process, the following questions are employed to determine whether the program, project, or product is eligible for further consideration:

Is it a government or non-profit agency-sponsored program, project, or product?

Does it represent a new and creative approach to problem(s) or issue(s)?
-
Does the program, project, or product address significant problem(s) or issue(s) that are local, regional or national in scope?

Has the program, project, or product been operational for at least one year (i.e., since one year before the time of submission of the nomination)?
-
Has the program, project, or product been effective in achieving its stated goals and purposes to this point?
-
Could the program, project, or product be easily transferred to other states or regions?

National Awards in Excellence
Overview
The National Awards in Excellence are awarded every four years in partnership with the Northeast States Emergency Consortium (NESEC), the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC), and the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup (CREW). These awards recognize persons,
organizations and agencies in acknowledgement of their achievements, leadership and dedication in earthquake hazards reduction as demonstrated through exemplary programs, projects, and products that address earthquake risk reduction with the United States.
Eligibility
Those eligible for nomination include persons; state, provincial, territorial, regional, county, and city governments; non-profit organizations; businesses; and
academic institutions. Nominations may be made for earthquake programs, projects or products for which the
nominee has provided leadership, effort, and technical assistance. Nominations must be made by someone outside of the nominated agency.

Selection Criteria
During the award selection process, the following questions are employed to determine whether the nominee is eligible for further consideration:

Is the nominee eligible for the award?

Does the program, project or product represent a new and/or creative approach to problems or issues in the category in which it is nominated?

Does the program, project or product provide evidence of outcomes which have achieved its state goals and objectives to this point?

Has the program, project or product been operational for at least one year from the date of nomination?
-
Can the program, project or product be applied to other locations, issues or problems?
