WSSPC Field Trip (Optional event; not included with registration)
Earthquakes and Earthquake Research in Western Nevada
Noon to 5:00pm
Leader: Craig dePolo, Nevada Bureau of
Mines and Geology.
A field trip will overview local earthquake geology and emergency response
issues, and will visit engineering and seismological laboratories and a
base-isolated building at the University of Nevada, Reno. Reno’s Cenozoic
geology and earthquake hazard will be presented including its earthquake
history and local active faults. The field trip will visit and be briefed on
the Washoe County Emergency Operations Center, where there will be a short
presentation on post-disaster building inspections. At the University of
Nevada, Reno tours will learn about large-scale shake tables used for
earthquake load testing, the base isolation of a building that is over a
century old, and the Nevada Seismological Network and how earthquakes are
recorded, processed, and displayed. Early registration is encouraged.
Fee: $50 (Before August 1, 2007; $60
thereafter). Includes transportation and a box
lunch.
