CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

To Be Presented at the WSSPC Annual Conference
Reno, Nevada
September 30 - October 3, 2007

Application
Here is the 2007 Application for the WSSPC Awards in Excellence.  Please note, the deadline for filing applications is Thursday, May 10, 2007.

Overview

The Western States Seismic Policy Council Awards in Excellence program recognizes achievement in different areas of earthquake mitigation, preparedness and response. Since 1996, the Awards have been an effective method to share model programs, and recognize the hard-working, creative and innovative efforts within the earthquake hazards reduction community.

It is the intent of WSSPC’s Awards in Excellence to bring greater visibility to exemplary state, county and local programs and policies and to facilitate the transfer of those successful experiences to other states. Awards are presented at the WSSPC Annual Conference in the Fall.

Eligibility
State, provincial, county, or city governmental or non-profit agencies are eligible for the WSSPC Awards in Excellence.  Programs must be nominated by someone outside of the nominated agency.

Categories
Awards are in the following categories:

  • Mitigation Efforts
  • Response Plans/Materials
  • Use of New Technology
  • Innovations (i.e. Private/Public Partnership)
  • Research Projects
  • Non-Profit Agency Efforts
  • Legislation
  • Educational Outreach Programs (three areas awarded):
          Outreach to Business/Government
          Outreach to Schools
          Outreach to General Public

Selection Criteria
At each stage of the award selection process, the following questions are employed to determine whether the program or policy is eligible for further consideration:

  • Is it a state/local/regional government or non-profit agency sponsored program or product?
  • Does it represent a new and creative approach to problem(s) or issue(s)?
  • Does the program or product address significant problem(s) or issue(s) that are local, regional or national in scope?
  • Has the program been operational for at least one year (i.e., since at least June of the previous year)?
  • Has the program or product been effective in achieving its stated goals and purposes to this point?
  • Could the program or product be easily transferred to other states or
    regions?

Award

WSSPC Awards in Excellence winners receive a plaque recognizing their achievement in the award categories during the Awards Luncheon at the WSSPC Annual Conference, Tuesday, October 2, 2007, and will have an opportunity to display their winning projects. One award is selected to receive the Overall Excellence in Mitigation Award. Descriptions of each awarded program are included in an annual WSSPC Awards in Excellence Volume.

WSSPC Awards in Excellence Volume
WSSPC showcases the Awards in Excellence winners each year by publishing their "success stories" and implementation details of successful and established mitigation programs for others to adapt in this summary volume.
