The Basin and Range Province Seismic Hazard Summit II addressed important issues and policies on seismic hazards in the western United States. State and federal agencies, as well as consulting companies and other businesses, led by Dr. Craig dePolo of Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology developed recommendations for seismic policy statements to be considered by the Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC) board. The initial product of this summit is the published Program with Abstracts and the policy recommendations. The final product will be a book of articles derived from talks and posters presented at the conference.

The Basin and Range Province Committee of WSSPC has been looking at seismic and mitigation issues, analyses, and policies common to the Basin and Range area for at least a decade. These conferences and their resulting publications have been extremely beneficial to participants and to the long-term welfare of the states.

This approach of focusing research and mitigation interest on issues and policies within a physiographic region could and should be applied to other regions, both in the United States and throughout the world.

"The summit is not only a knowledge-fest but an important opportunity to formulate good seismic policy."
