In the aftermath of the Nisqually
Earthquake, Washington was once again reminded that it is Earthquake
Country. After the earthquake hits, it's too late to protect one's family,
home and belongings. However, we are reminded that there are ways to limit
future earthquake damage and injury. With that in mind, Washington set out
to develop a booklet, Nisqually Earthquake 6.8, covering all facets
of earthquake planning and safety for the use of the public, businesses,
and government. A checklist was created for before and after the event
stressing the need for every Washingtonian to have an earthquake plan that
had been discussed and understood by everyone in the family or
organization. The booklet stresses the need for regular drills in the
home, school and business environments. It also revisits the successes and
failures of the Nisqually Earthquake lessons learned to incorporate them
into future earthquake planning.
Prior to the booklet, citizens were given
many different pieces of material that often overwhelmed them. Putting all
this information into one booklet made it easier for citizens to track and
implement ideas and safety procedures. The Nisqually Earthquake 6.8
booklet is a very attractive product, very comprehensive and yet very
digestible and is designed to more easily bring greater earthquake
awareness and preparedness to Washington State.
