“Emergency Preparedness for Schools,” is the
general name of our program, although each year we use a different title.
For the year submitted, 2001, the title was, “Safe Schools Equals
Safe Kids.”
This comprehensive training program consisted of a
video, training booklet, a letter of certification from the schools, and
sign-in sheets. Each school,
including children centers, adult and continuation (932 in all) received the
material.
Some years, we train an administrator and a teacher
from each school in a series of all-day sessions.
Budget constraints cause the program to vary from the
trainer-of-trainer approach to the “in the mail” approach depending on
the budget situation. Regardless,
the training program is closely monitored and school administrators must see
that the video and training materials are used at each school site and
sign-off on the letter of certification and submit same to our Office of
Emergency Services.
Our training program also provides a “Monthly
Topic” memo to each school throughout the year.
Each topic is then discussed during a facility meeting. Topics include earthquake information, evacuation procedures,
first-aid, etc.
All schools recognize, and use, the mandated
Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) in dealing with emergencies.
Time and again we have conducted post-event debriefings at schools
and have found that our system has worked, be it a lost child, a shooting,
lock-down, or other emergencies.
Each year we work on new ways to get the message of
preparedness out to the schools and non-school sites. The commitment of our Board of Education, Superintendent, and
other, has allowed us to move forward with this comprehensive training
program.
